How to cut perfect 2" squares - in 3 minutes

Cutting fabric is one of those steps that can actually take forever. Measuring, lining up your fabric, ruler and cutting mat, trimming and making sure there are no whoopsies.

If you ever felt not starting a project because you dreaded the pesky cutting step - you're not alone

But there is a much faster way.

In this video, I'll show you how I cut 276 perfect 2" squares in under 3 minutes. With NO templates, NO marking, NO measurements. And definitely no complicated setup.

And of course make sure to follow me over on YouTube for more.

What you'll learn

And this is what you'll get out of it.

  • how to cut multiple layers accurately (precision and speed)
  • how to avoid marking and measuring
  • a simple method to speed up your cutting process

I am cutting 2" squares, as they are favourite size for small quilty bag projects. But this works for all kind of sizes. The sky is the limit!

Materials

And this is what you'll need.

Why this matters

Neat patchwork panels depend on you cutting your shapes precisely. Every time. Which makes piecing them so much easier. Avoiding wonky panels.

I know, I know. Loads of people swear by the interfacing technique. Where you iron your fabric onto interfacing, and sew them together is rows, cut the seam allowance and then sew them all together. And yes - that does work. But your panels get thicker and clunky.

I personally, don't love that.

And this works much better for me. Relying on precision, while I don't actually have to pay attention.

What to make next

And now we have 276 squares. What are we making? Very good, I am glad you've asked.

I love to use mine for quick and small patchwork projects. Anything really that I can finish in one sitting. Just like the kinchaku, needle book or the classic quilted boxy pouch.

If you're not sure where to start, I'd highly recommend the beginner friendly kinchaku bag. It's such a fun project. Quick to make. And oh so satisfying.

But I am sure you'll find some fun projects for all the squares.

I hope this helps you spend less time cutting and more time actually sewing... which is the fun part after all.

Happy Sewing and big quilty hugs.
