My friends... this has to be the most scary thing I'ver ever attempted to make. However, it's also one of the cutest tiny things everrrr!
But let's start at the beginning.
Years and years ago I bought a zipper pouch (I know, I know - I could have made it myself but I just didn't believe I had the guts to do it, so I bought it). It is made out of sequins and I looove it so much. Tbh the shape inspired me to make the Quilted Boxy Pouch as it was just perfect. However. Think sparkly sequin. Disco. 90s fun.
Now fast forward a year or so and I bought sequin fabric. Not sure what I was thinking that day. When it arrived it truly got me scared so I safely stored it aways for another months.
Well. Last week I got it out and very bravely cut into it.
It was so scary. Cut sequins everywhere. I was prepared to clean the room a bit but didn't realise the whole house needed a clean after. And ohhh well, my poor machine also got a spa day. Deep cleaning her after I had finished.
But what can I say. I think it was worth it. I absolutely love this bag.
Let me show you.

I was worth it, right?
So yes. Sequins are scary. And messy. And I might have broken a needle as well (which really doesn't happen often). But I think it was worth it.
I might not make them every day as the clean up is intensive. However. Give me a neon zipper and I might just make another one.
Ok. Now I've shown you. And I bet you agree it's super cute. Let's talk about the details a little.
This Sequin Boxy Pouch is based on the super popular Quilted Boxy Pouch. I made the smallest size (and have totally planned already to make a bigger one next). So, as with all the Quilted Boxy Pouches - the bag is fully lined with NO binding and NO raw edges on the inside. Making the bag making process super easy.
So easy bag construction. Not so easy material.
So overall. I would say, if you are a confident beginner and not scared of making a little mess - this is for you. The bag itself is super easy to make and you can follow my video tutorial over here if you like.
And now - let's go into details in regards to materials. If you've made it this far, I am sure you like to give them a try as well.
So here we go.
Materials for the Sequin Boxy Pouch
This bag is the MINI version of the Quilted Boxy Pouch. You can find the pattern here, it comes in 3 sizes, step by step instructions and a video tutorial.
Sequin Fabric
I bought this sequin fabric over on Etsy. It's super affordable and I got far too much. This will last me forever.
Fabric
You'll need fabric to line your bag. I'm sure you have plenty but if you like to go shopping, this is the one I have used. It really works well as the sequin fabric is a little see through. So the sequins seem to have a tint of pink...
Zipper
I got this zipper a while ago and as you might know, neon zippers are notoriously hard to find. By now it has unfortunately sold out but these are the ones I usually use. Super cute round zippers. And affordable.
Zipper Tape
Again. I unfortunately don't a link for this pink tape. A friend gave it to me years ago but I usually like to use this sparkly, gold elastic. It works soo incredibly well. I ran out and need to order more - but this gold one is seriously my favourite.
Thread
Usually I would use Aurifil 28wt for topstitching. But sewing over sequin across the zipper was scary enough. And I wanted my seam to be as invisible as possible. So I used Aurifil 50wt throughout the project (for construction and topstitching) and it worked like a dream.
Further materials
As always (like in for all my bags), I am using a denim/ jeans needle. They are super strong and can sewing over tons of layers. Saying that - I had one break on my. Fine. Sparkly goodness comes at a cost.
I was making the bag on my trusted Janome M7. She's a real workhorse and I love her so much. I believe she's now being replaced by the M8.
And finally. Sewing tools. As always, I am using a rotary cutter, ruler (this iridescent one is my fave ever) and cutting mat. Saying that - I used an old blade in my rotary cutter. Do sequins dull the blade? I don't know but I wasn't willing to risk my sharp new blade. And that's it.
All in all. I can only highly recommend making a bag using sequin fabric. I love this mini and will be making a lot more for sure. But I will be more prepared. Planning an in depth cleaning session from the start.
Hope you'll like this one as much as I do.
As always - I hug your face for being here.
