Super Easy Bag - Pattern and Tutorial

Super Easy Bag - sewing pattern and video tutorial for beginners

Drum roll, please!! Let me introduce you to my second pattern of the NEW Sewing Series for Beginners.

The Super Easy Bag!

Yet another super easy sewing pattern, showing you what you can do on your sewing machine in just a couple steps. And it won't take you long. About 30 minutes and your bag is done. Maybe a little longer in you're making the slightly more advance patchwork version.

But let's get started.

Super Easy Series

This Series (there will be a lot more projects coming over the next months and you can find the first one here - this way to the Super Easy Baskets) is focusing on building your skills and confidence. And as per name, it's designed for beginners. Of course, everyone is welcome. But the idea is to show you how easy it is to make something cute.

No more pillow covers or boring cotton pads for you as a beginner project!

Video Tutorial

And if you're a fellow visual learner, please see for yourself how easy it is to make your very own bag. It's truly so, so easy.

Watch the video tutorial on how to make your bag right here!

And of course make sure to follow me over on YouTube for more.

Starting with the whole cloth bag. Super easy and straight forward.

And here's a quick video on how to piece your patchwork panel!

And of course make sure to follow me over on YouTube for more.

And now that you can make all the patchwork panels - you can use them as a base for your bag and just follow the pattern to make your bag. Again, super easy.

Sewing Pattern

Now let's talk about the pattern a little more.

This is what you'll get.

The pattern comes in three sizes and two styles (whole cloth and patchwork). My favourite one is the small patchwork version... but I am sure you'll have a fave size as well.

Finished sizes (all in wxh):

  • Large: approx. 8" x 6" (wxh)
  • Small: approx. 6" x 4" (wxh)
  • Mirco: approx. 4" x 3" (wxh)

And as mentioned above, the basket comes in two styles. Whole cloth ( = using only one piece of fabric per section) and patchwork ( = piecing together smaller pieces to make your panels).

Bonus: You'll also learn how to install zipper tabs for a super neat and professional finish and I share how to round of the corners of your bag (making it even cuter imo).

The step by step sewing pattern comes with a ton of pictures, tables, instructions and links to helpful video tutorials. I promise you, it's like I am sitting right next to you. Again, this project is made for beginners in mind. Or kids. Whoever wants to learn making cute things with their machine.

Materials for your Bag

Let's talk about materials. Shall we?

As always - you won't need a lot. I made this pattern super easy and accessible. No need to buy crazy fancy supplies, notions or materials.

Next to a copy of the pattern, you will need fabric, thread, left over batting from your last quilt, a zipper and your basic sewing supplies.

Fabric I like using quilting cotton but of course you can opt for stronger fabric like canvas or denim. Whatever you fancy really.

Thread Any thread will do. I like a combination of classic Aurifil 50wt for construction and 28wt for all visible seams (top stitching along the edge and machine quilting).

Batting Left over batting from your last quilt will do. I like using this one, but whatever you have at home will do!

Zipper. Depending on the size of bag you're planning to make you can use a zipper as short as 4" (it's 4" or longer for the micro, 6" or longer for the small one and 8" or longer for the large one). I like to buy 10" zipper in bulk and just use them for everything.

Basic Sewing Supplies You will need your sewing machine, rotary cutter, cutting mat, ruler, hera marker, pen, binding clips, scissors and maybe a seam ripper (just in case).

And of course. If you're planning to make a patchwork bag, you will need a selection of prints. But I am sure you have plenty of those at home. Everything you probably have laying around already. No need to spend more money on stuff.
