Super Easy Baskets - Pattern and Tutorial

Super Simple Basket - sewing pattern and video tutorial for beginners

Drum roll, please!! Let me introduce you to my brand new Sewing Series for Beginners.

The SUPER EASY series, starting with BASKETS!

We are starting with a ridiculously easy pattern, showing you what you can do on your sewing machine in just couple steps. And it shouldn't take you long. Twenty minutes tops for a basket - maybe a little longer if you're making the advance version.

But let me start at the beginning.

Super Easy Series

This Series (there will be a lot more projects coming over the next months) is focusing on building your skills and confidence. And as per name, it's designed for beginners. Of course, everyone is welcome. But the idea is to show you how easy it is to make something cute.

No more pillow covers or boring cotton pads for you as a beginner project!

Super Simple Baskets

Now, let me tell you a little more about the baskets.

Again. Super easy to make. But now... I would like to challenge you a little. After learning how to make the simple ( = whole cloth version, aka making a basket out of one piece of fabric), I am showing you how to make a patchwork one ( = piecing your panels together using loads of smaller pieces).

So. The first part of the pattern, and video tutorial for that matter, focuses on the step by step construction of your basket. And then the second part is dedicated to make a patchwork basket.

And this one below the simple one.

Video Tutorial

And if you're a visual learner, please see for yourself how easy it is to make your very own baskets. It's only a couple straight lines.

Watch the video tutorial right here!

And of course make sure to follow me over on YouTube for more.

Both techniques, the whole cloth version and then the patchwork baskets are covered in this video.

And trust me - you can totally make them both. Even as a beginner!

Sewing Pattern

Now let's talk about the pattern a little more.

This is what you'll get.

The pattern comes in six sizes (three bases and each of them in two heights, tall and shorty). My favourite one is the "perfect shorty"... but I am sure you'll have a fave size as well.

Finished sizes (all in wxdxh):

  • Perfect (small base): Tall one is 3.5" x 3" x 5" and the shorty is 3.5" x 3" x 3"
  • Big (big base): Tall one is 4.5" x 4" x 6.5" and the shorty is 4.5" x 4" x 3.5"
  • Box (rectangular base): Tall one is 6.5" x 3" x 5" and the shorty is 6.5" x 3" x 3"

And as mentioned above, the basket comes in two styles. Whole cloth ( = using only one piece of fabric per section) and patchwork ( = piecing together smaller pieces to make your panels).

Bonus: You can totally use your lining to create a faux piping edge but that comes at a cost. You basket won't be reversible anymore (I can totally live with that and substitute it for cuteness).

The step by step sewing pattern comes with a ton of pictures, tables, instructions and links to helpful video tutorials. I promise you, it's like I am sitting right next to you. Again, this project is made for beginners in mind. Or kids. Whoever wants to learn making cute things with their machine.

Materials for your Baskets

Now a quick word on materials.

You won't need a lot. Again, I made this pattern super easy and accessible. No need to buy crazy fancy interfacing (I purposely skipped them for this project).

Next to a copy of the pattern, you will need fabric, thread and your basic sewing supplies.

Fabric I like using quilting cotton but of course you can opt for stronger fabric like canvas or denim. Whatever you fancy really.

Thread Any thread will do. I like a combination of classic Aurifil 50wt for construction and 28wt for all visible seams (top stitching along the edge and machine quilting).]

Basic Sewing Supplies You will need your sewing machine, rotary cutter, cutting mat, ruler, hera marker, pen, binding clips, scissors and maybe a seam ripper (just in case).

And of course. If you're planning to make a patchwork basket, you will need a selection of prints. But I am sure you have plenty of those at home. And for all the quilty texture - I am machine quilting my patchwork panels onto scrap pieces of quilt batting. Everything you probably have laying around already. No need to spend more money on stuff.

Now speaking of patchwork. I love to integrate little blocks or orphan blocks into my patchwork panels. And my favourite is the economy block (you can read about the block here, grab the free pattern and templates here).

And that's a wrap, my friend. The first project of the Super Easy Series and I hope you'll love it as much as I do.

Ohh and of course, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out. I am only an email (laura@sweetcinnamonroses.com) away and here to help. Even though I know you can totally do it!!!

As always. I hug your face.
