Welcome to Day 3

Welcome to day 3 of the Quilted Boxy Pouch Sew Along! I am so excited to have you join me! And we are almost half way there... Wahooo!

Today we are inserting the zipper. And I promise - it's super easy! Only a couple straight lines to sew and probably the fastest step of them all.

And here again the schedule for the week!

  • Day 1 - piece your patchwork panels
  • Day 2 - quilting your panels
  • Day 3 - insert your zipper (today)
  • Day 4 - assemble your bag
  • Day 5 - finishing touches

It's going to be a super quick Sew Along and today is particularly quick. It's literally just a couple straight lines.

If you feel you're falling a little behind. No worries! Don't feel pressured to rush along. Save your email and catch up whenever you're ready! You are in charge, lovely.

Today I am sharing how I insert my zipper. Please, please, please don't be intimidated by zippers, I know they have a bad rep but it's all a myth! It's really easy and the only skill you'll need is sewing a couple straight (-ish) lines. Pinkie promise!

But see for yourself…

Again, you don't have to buy anything! I am sure you have plenty zippers at home waiting to be finally used. Just pick one that's about 10" long and made out of plastic (as you don't want to sew over metal!!!).

But of course... if you're curious about some of the materials I am using, please have a look below for more details.

Zipper. I always use 10" zippers. Like always. They are my absolute go-to zipper length for literally everything. Even for much smaller pouches... you can always chop off the ends of a plastic zipper, right?

And now the tip: buy them in bulk! I order mine all the way from the US but they are here in absolute no time, super cheap if I buy a pack of a 100 or more and the colour choice is amazing (cotton candy pink, bubble gum pink and gray are my faves if you were wondering).

Ribbon. Totally optional. But pretty ribbon can never be wrong, am I right? I like the plain off-white herringbone one a lot but of course, who can say no to pretty pink ribbons... And you only need a little (about 3" per boxy pouch).

Thread. You will need thread. I am using Aurifil 50wt for inserting the zipper. Those seams won't be visible later on. And for topstitching along the zipper, I am switching over to Aurifil 28wt. And that's a visible seam later on... hence the pretty (slightly thicker) thread!

Share your progress!

And now the fun bit! Wahoooo! Please share your Quilty Boxy Pouch WIP over on Instagram (or Facebook) using the #quiltedboxypouch. Showing that zippers are indeed easy and nothing to be scared of!!

And of course... I can't wait to see it! Cheering you on from the side line.

And thats's a wrap for day 3. You done it! The zipper is in and tomorrow we are assembling your boxy pouch. It will be great fun as you can see your pouch taking shape!

Take care and big quilty hugs,

"A boxy pouch with no interior binding? That’s a winner every time. It’s beginner friendly, sews up quick in three sizes (I thought the mini was particularly cute!) and like I said: no binding.”
